At Edison Elementary students were challenged by their Principal, Mrs. Shelton, to read 500 books to get her to “KISS A PIG”. The librarian, Mrs. Smythe, added a second challenge and said she would also Kiss the Pig if they reached 700 books for Read Across America Week. Then came the wonderful “WOW” moment of how the students surpassed both of the goals, by collectively reading 2,709 books. Students and the parent filled audience started to chant “Kiss the Pig”. As the chant echoed through the large room, both Mrs. Shelton and Mrs. Smythe lean in for the Kissing a Pig debut.
Mrs. Smythe even lathered on some very colorful lipstick for her smooch.
The students were joined by the Cat in the Hat to set off the beginning of the assembly and festivity leading up to the event. The challenge results and the possible kissing of one handsome pig. The students took turns leading in such things as the pledge allegiance to telling jokes to the crowd. There was even a fun song about “liking peanut butter, on our head”. From start to finish, watching this assembly from a spectating parents view I really enjoyed the entertainment and heart at the core of it, to show the kids how to laugh and have fun in celebration of a goal being reached. Even the pig left with a smile on his face.
