Bristow’s Mayor Wyatt addressed the Lincoln Alumni this Labor Day with a message that honored both the struggles and triumphs of Black history. Speaking to those who lived through segregation as well as to younger generations, she reflected on the continued success of Black men and women despite the weight of history.
“Lincoln’s history is one of resilience, pride, and a community that believes education isn’t just about knowledge, but liberation.”
Mayor Wyatt admitted that it felt “awkward to even read those words, as if she is voicing something that isn’t hers to voice,” acknowledging the gaps in the history she was taught growing up in the 1960s. She emphasized that Black and Native American history has long been preserved through storytelling, offering truths absent from traditional history books.
“These stories are important to our shared history as a community.”
