June Bristow OHCE Meeting of Business & Leader Lesson on “Stay Strong, Stay Healthy” Including Exercises for Better Balance By Carolyn Kuykendall The Bristow OHCE met at Trinity Baptist Church in Bristow for a monthly meeting on June 12, 2024. The meeting opened by Ray Kinslow with “God is Able.” Tonja Edwards led the group in pledge to flag and OHCE creed. Ray Kinslow, Treasurer, reported no activity, but we had our “Pennies for Friendship jar. Dr. Joyce Wade Kinslow, Secretary, read minutes and they were approved. Members answered a roll call to “What have you moved to another location to keep from falling over it”? Responses were: plants, shoes, footstool, throw rugs, and dog food pan. For “Jane’s Household Tips,” Sheryl explained many uses of toothpaste. An example is used as a cleaning agent for cleaning shoes,chrome, etc. It can also be used as a filler for smaller holes in a wall. Business included President Kathy reporting we made $39.60 from May OHCE Rummage Sale. Kathy announced July upcoming meetings of Creek County Executive Meeting and Council Meeting. Other County Business included: Brief discussion of fair booth display, with Judy saying she would make a crochet item Hosting/being hosted by another club State Conference-Kathy and Carolyn said they were no longer interested in going New business included plans to attend the Bristow Historical Society Smithsonian Display on Monday, June 24, 2024, followed by a luncheon discussion.
Leader Training Lesson Presented By Carolyn Kuykendall Carolyn Kuykendall, who teaches a local exercise group, was our Leader Training Lesson presenter: “Exercises for Better Balance-Stay Strong, Stay Healthy.” Carolyn emphasized exercises will result in staying strong and healthy. She added only 17% of older adults meet the recommendations for physical activity, and less than 30% meet dietary guidelines for fruits/vegetables. Carolyn listed exercise guidelines as: Sit less and move moderately 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise, but know your body Health experts recommend 300 minutes per week of moderate intensity Adults should do muscle strengthens involving twelve or more muscle groups. (Twothree days weekly, for providing additional health benefits.)
Carolyn listed physical activity for reducing the risk of falls because it provides: ability to do daily tasks, provide muscle mass, strength and balance, bone density, aids to deter arthritis symptoms, increases metabolic rate, and helps with glucose control and lip;id profile. Carolyn led discussion of various exercises based on individuals. Carolyn shared pages helpful, i.e., what exercises should the class include? She demonstrated leg squats and standing leg curl, knee extension and side hip raise, etc. Carolyn said that not all do all, but what you feel comfortable to do. She also stated that there are television shows/programs anyone can watch.
