Clear Vision before Kindergarten

The Lions Clubs International has long been known for its commitment to protecting and improving vision in communities around the world. That mission was recently demonstrated locally as the Lions Club, alongside the high school Leo Club, provided vision screenings for Pre-K students to help identify potential eye concerns before children enter kindergarten.

Early detection is critical. Many young children are unable to articulate that they are struggling to see clearly, and undiagnosed vision problems can impact reading readiness, classroom confidence, and overall development. By offering quick and efficient screenings, the Lions and Leo volunteers help ensure that families and schools receive early referrals when needed.

The screenings are designed to be simple, portable, and accessible. The eye assessment equipment fits inside a luggage-style suitcase, does not require internet access to operate, and takes only seconds per child. No personal information other than the child’s age is needed to complete the screening, and volunteers typically do not even know the child’s name during the process. This protects privacy while still identifying potential concerns. The equipment can read through contact lenses and is even capable of screening newborns, making it a powerful tool for early intervention.

Volunteers can screen approximately 80 to 130 children per hour, even with minimal technical training. When a potential issue is detected, referrals are sent directly to the school, ensuring parents are informed and can seek follow-up care with an eye professional.

This partnership between community service leaders and high school students reflects the heart of the Lions’ motto: “We Serve.” By investing time and smiles, sometimes enough to make their cheeks sore, these volunteers are helping children step into kindergarten with clearer vision and greater confidence for the road ahead.
