In the sweltering July heat, three visitors from Celle, Germany, Lothar, Birgit, and their daughter Julia, immersed themselves in the Bristow community. Julia first visited Oklahoma in 2023 through the Tulsa-Celle Oil Exchange Program, a unique initiative connecting families and oil industry professionals to foster lasting relationships between sister cultures. During her stay, she lived with a Bristow host family, embracing local life, forging friendships, and creating cherished memories.
This summer, Julia returned with her parents, Lothar and Birgit, to Bristow. The family stayed in a cozy rental on Main Street, soaking up the charm of small-town life. They explored the community, reconnected with friends, and joined locals in daily activities where their curiosity about our traditions sparked lively exchanges. They traveled historic Route 66, stopping between Tulsa and Oklahoma City, with a memorable day trip to Pawhuska. The local Train Museum Depot ran by volunteers was a informative stop.
Despite language differences and accents, communication flowed effortlessly. Lothar, with a warm grin, said, “Just start talking!”, and so we did. His simple encouragement sparked beautiful, insightful conversations and I enjoyed how life looked from his eyes. Sitting with the Laude family, I witnessed a profound love and respect among them that warmed my heart.
Birgit’s deep affection for her family shone through, needing no translation. Julia’s attentive, heartfelt responses revealed a wisdom beyond her years, her
“Just start talking, everything begins there”. As they return to Celle, I reflect on their words and the warmth their presence brought to my heart. My time with them reminded me why Bristow and our community of people matter: the stories we share and the joy of welcoming visitors from around the world to experience nostalgic Route 66 and our town. The Laudes put a new warming perspective of Bristow, in my heart, stirring in me to share our home with even greater openness. Thank you, Lothar, Birgit, and Julia, for reminding me that love, curiosity, and community transcend all borders. Your visit showed the beauty in our everyday spaces and the power of connection, encouraging us to keep our doors open to the world.
