Many people watch horror films. They are very graphic, and are written with realistic ideas and themes. Viewers tend to believe that the creatures, such as werewolves and vampires, are real beings. Even some adults are fearful of camping and entering darkened rooms in their own homes.
Why is it easier to believe in horror movie magic than in Jesus Christ? More eyewitnesses have seen Jesus than have claimed to have seen those creatures, yet Jesus is fictional in many people’s minds. Why?
When the Bible tells us about all that Jesus said and did, it is an actual historic record. Some open-minded people have researched to “prove” the Bible is false, yet they often come to the knowledge of the truth.
In John 11 we read that Lazarus was raised after a few days in his tomb. One result was that “many…of the Jews…beheld what He had done, (and) believed in Him” (vs. 45).
Others, however, told the religious leaders who hated Jesus. They conspired to destroy Him, even though they’d acknowledged His miracles (vs. 46-48). How foolish! Why don’t more people believe?
In John 12, Jesus answers that question. He rode into Jerusalem on a humble donkey (vs. 12-15). John tells us that the great multitude shouted praises. The eyewitnesses to Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead were telling others about it (vs. 17-18).
Some were there because they possibly wanted to see a miracle for themselves. Here’s the answer as to why more don’t believe: Jesus said, “He who loves his life loses it; and he who hates his life in this world shall keep it to life eternal. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there shall My servant also be; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor Him” (vs. 25-26).
Jesus was troubled by what He knew was coming. He was deserted by friends, beaten mercilessly, and finally His own death was the worst. All of this was painful for the innocent Son of God. But He said, “For this purpose I came to this hour” (vs. 27).
People want forgiveness of their sins without the sacrifice. That’s like being paid for not working a job! Why don’t more people believe? Please read verses 44-50.
Jesus would say that people just don’t want to give up the pleasures of this life. They love their earthly lives. The things of this world have become more valuable than having gratitude for what Jesus did for them. Jesus gave His life completely. Is that how the church honors Jesus?
What’s worth more to you than following and serving Jesus? Why don’t you believe?
