Nwanyi Imo dug his own grave. He believed “This is how I will die.” The group had already killed one man and he was next.
No outsiders could stop this murder. What would you do?
Nwanyi didn’t “want to die like this.”
“Lord, I believe you can deliver me…I’ve preached about Daniel in the lion’s den and how you delivered Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego from the fiery furnace. Are you still the same God? You can show me now. Please give me that faith.”
Nawanyi hoped that God would give him wings or send fire from heaven, “but God answered in a much different way.” One killer picked up Nawanyi’s Bible as he dug his own grave, asking him what “all the markings in it mean.”
“Those are my favorite verses.” The killer began reading them. He then turned to his fellow killers, saying, “Friends, I know we are going to kill this man, but please let me help him dig!”
Nwanyi realized, with that man’s help, that his grave would soon be finished. “Lord, what are You going to do?”
Nwanyi’s grave was ready for his corpse. The killer holding Nwanyi’s Bible asked, “Why should we use the grave for this man we don’t even know? Let him go and dig another grave…! This is our field, why should we bury him here?”
The group agreed. The man they had just killed was rolled into that grave. Nwanyi prayed to God. He wanted to preach to the killers about Jesus.
The man who held Nwanyi’s Bible asked if he could keep it, but the other killers protested. “No! That is ours - you will have to pay for it!”
Nwanyi asked the men if he could speak a message from the Bible. Some agreed, but others sharply stated,“No! He is our enemy and has nothing to say to us!”The killers were about to fight each other.
The oldest said, “Why are you going to fight over someone you don’tevenknow? Thosewho want to listen, sit and listen; others, shut your ears. When he is done, we will kill him.”
During the 1994 genocide in Rwanda between the Hutu and Tootsis tribes, approximately one million people were slaughtered, including Nwanyi’s entire family. He told the killers, “There is another tribe…(Christian)…they have given their hearts to Jesus.” He read aloud 2 Peter 2:9-10.
When he finished preaching, some killers were crying, and the leader declared, “No one is going to kill this man!”
In the face of death, Jesus brought him an unexpected answer to prayer.
Jesus stopped the bullet! How big is your faith? Turn to Jesus, and live your life for Him!
