Wellon B. Poe, 1923 - 2018

Wellon B. Poe was born Aug. 15, 1923, to George and Lula (Bond) Poe in Whitefield. He departed this life Aug. 23, 2018, at the age of 95 years and eight days.

He served in the United States Army during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in November of 1946. He obtained an associate’s degree from Eastern Oklahoma State College; a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Northeastern State University, while lettering in baseball as catcher.

Wellon B. Poe and Verna Dean Cozart were united in marriage on Nov. 19, 1954, in Grove. Together, they had three children, Cathy, Wellon Jr. and Teresa. He taught in several schools including Dewar, Locust Grove and Pawnee before settling in Bristow in 1970. He coached many different sports including baseball, basketball, football and track. During his numerous years of coaching he produced winning teams and state contenders. He retired from teaching in 1986.

An active member of many civic clubs, Wellon was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Bristow Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Bedouin Shriner’s Lodge, the McAlester Scottish Rite Consistory, American Legion and the Oklahoma Coaches Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, of Bristow, where he taught Sunday school and vacation Bible School.

Wellon had many joys in life including hunting, fishing, raising and training bird dogs and coaching little league baseball. He was a longtime Oklahoma Sooner football fan and ticket holder who enjoyed attending games at home as well as games throughout the United States. Many of these travels included three generations and provided educational experiences, centering around historical events. He enjoyed teaching his grandkids about geography and history of our nation.

He is survived by his wife of almost 64 years, Verna Dean Poe, of Bristow; daughter, Cathy Dean Barnett and husband, Gary, of Newalla; son, Wellon B. Poe, Jr. and wife, Kim, of Edmond; daughter, Teresa Denton and husband, David, of Tulsa; son, George Lee Poe, of Coweta; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Earl and Claud Poe and two sisters, Dicie Graves and Anna Walker.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at the Bristow First Baptist Church with Reverend D.J. Carney officiating. Interment followed at 3 p.m at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City.
