Hazel Lorene Fugate Smith, 1925 - 2020

Hazel, the oldest of four daughters born to Mable Johnson and Howard Fugate, arrived on Jan. 5, 1925. She was invited to Heaven on June 28, 2020. Born in Bristow, she graduated high school from Maud.

Hazel met the love of her life Orville R. Smith and they were married on Sept. 2, 1942. To this union were born two children, Richard Alan and Nancy Sue.

While raising her children, Hazel maintained a career in banking bookkeeping. She developed her banking skills in Casper, Wyoming and Glendive, Montana as the family moved north during the development of the oil fields. In the 1950’s, the family returned to Bristow, where she continued her career with the Bristow Community Bank. She would later retire from First State Bank of Shawnee. Hazel was an active member and officer for a community service organization Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA). Bible study, church activities and being a member of the Hobby Club were activities she enjoyed. Following her husband’s death, she moved to Depew and attended First Baptist Church until moving to the Bristow Rainbow Assisted Living Center. Hazel was a loving mother and was always helping her family when needed. She enjoyed reading books, loved to shop and most of all spending time with her grandchildren, whom she loved so much.

Hazel is survived by her son, Richard Smith and wife Deanna; one sister, Patsy Brown; four grandchildren, Karla Toles, Sherri Hutchins, Michael Smith and Joanna Bartholomew; 12 great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren and one on the way.

She is predeceased by her parents, husband, daughter, grandson Alan (Larry) Armer and two sisters, Betty Odell and Virginia Hopper.

Graveside were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at Bristow City Cemetery with Reverend James Lame officiating. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
