A few months back, Bristow News brought you the story about Charlie, the dog who roamed the streets of Depew, never meeting a stranger and getting special treatment wherever he went. The story was about a city ordinance that required all owners to keep their pets contained inside their yard, on a leash or in a pen. The entire town wondered what would become of Charlie, would he be picked up and taken to an animal shelter. That couldn’t be. Charlie has roamed the streets for a long time. Being a familiar face for years and has a certain routine he follows, like, going to the school so he can greet the kids that are getting of the bus or standing outside the athletic department, waiting for those Slim Jims the coach would hand him out the back door or just laying around watching the car wash being refurbished.
This is an update on Charlie, the dog. Sadness and tragedy fell upon Charlie when his owner Shania Shelton was killed in a car accident outside of Bristow, Friday evening. Charlie knew when she didn’t come home that night that something wasn wrong.
The entire Town of Depew has come together to ensure that Charlie continues to get the love and support he deserves. Facebook was flooded with one question. “What is going to happen to Charlie?”
Charlie is going to be just fine, thanks to all the supportive people in the Depew community. His care has received 100 percent positive responses. A contractor offered to build a dog house for Charlie. This dog house would be equipped with heat and air, another is thinking about writing a book about Charlie. In recognition of Charlie’s place in the community, the Depew Police Department has proudly named Charlie the Honorary Night Watch Officer. Charlie will continue his patrol route as he always does. The title is pure ceremonial but it recognizes what many have known for years. Charlie has always been looking out for Depew and the residents who live there.
You know the old saying “What goes around, comes around”? This went full circle. Some officers were a badge, some wear a vest. Charlie has always worn a smile.
Charlie’s story is a reminder that a small town is more than just a place, its a family. A shout out to Charlie the dog and the Town of Depew.
