Neal Kirk Pennington
Neal Kirk Pennington was born on June 20, 1932, in Abbott, Arkansas to W.O. and Ann (Kirk) Pennington. He departed this life July 15, 2018, at the age of 86 years and 15 days.
Neal was a 1950 graduate of Mansfield High School. On Nov. 29, 1953, Neal married Betty Nowlin in Wister, Oklahoma. To this union were born three children, David, Gary and Teresa.
Enlisting in the Air Force , Neal served his country from 1952 to January 1955. Following his discharge, Neal moved to Tulsa where he began a 44 year career in banking and finance. The final 16 years of his banking career were spent working for American National/SpiritBank until his retirement in 1999.
Neal had a passion for sports. He coached American Legion baseball in Bartlesville and Tulsa; he served on the Board of the Southeast Bears Athletic Association and the Tulsa Junior Athletic Association. In 1972, he began officiating high school football. He retired from officiating in 1999 and was inducted into the Greater Tulsa Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2002.
A passionate supporter of the Arkansas Razorbacks, Neal was a founding member and served as President of the Greater Tulsa Razorback Club. In the 1960’s and 70’s he was instrumental in the recruitment of several Tulsa area high school football and baseball players to the University of Arkansas. Neal was also an avid fisherman. During his retirement, he was a fixture at the Hartford Senior Citizen Center playing pool and dominos.
Neal was an active church member in the towns he lived in. He was a Sunday school teacher at Memorial Baptist Church in Tulsa, and served as a deacon at First Baptist Church Bristow and First Baptist Church Hartford. In addition to his church service, Neal was a Rotarian; serving as president of the Bristow Rotary Club.
Neal was passionate about sports, but he loved his family. He was devoted to his wife Betty, loved his children, was especially proud of his grandchildren, and was excited about the future of his greatgrandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Tulsa; two sons, David Pennington and wife, Teri, of Oklahoma City and Gary Pennington and wife, Susan, of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter, Teresa Pickens and husband, Ron, of Owasso; one sister, Imogene Couch, of Hartford, Arkansas; five grandchildren, Nathan Pennington, of Omaha, Nebraska; Kyle Pennington and wife, nesota; Lindsay McKee and husband, Brett, of Stillwater; Lauren Pickens, of Beaumont, Texas, and Mallory Pennington, of Kansas City, Missouri; and five great-grandchildren, Kinley, Karsten, Kambry, Kase McKee and Maggie Pennington.
He is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Enid Grigsby, Udene Boatright, Sue Evans and Carole Tucker.
Funeral services are 1 p.m, Saturday, July 21, 2018, at First Baptist Church, in Hartford, Arkansas with Dr. Tom Harris officiating. Interment will follow at Hartford Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Clarehouse, 7617 S. Mingo Rd., Tulsa, Oklahoma.
