Coleen Henderson Polm, 2018

Gypsy native Coleen Henderson Polm passed away Monday, Feb. 26, 2018, at the age of 90 years and 44 days. A daughter of James Gordon and Pearl Bell Jeffries Henderson, Coleen attended school at Iron Post then Gypsy High School. During her high school years, Coleen played forward on the basketball team. She was an avid, competitive player and helped Gypsy win many exciting victories. While she suffered from Alzheimers disease, memories of those days in Gypsy and basketball were vivid. Coleen made a first life choice on September 13, 1947, when she and Rufus Henry Polm were married by a justice of the peace in Bristow. They met three months earlier as Coleen and her best friend, Geneva Purvis, were walking down Bristow’s Main Street. Rufus and his friend were “dragging” Main. Six children were born during the couple’s 45 year marriage. Twins Pearl and Meryl, named for their maternal grandmother Pearl and greatgrandfather Meryl Everitt Jeffries, were born at Gypsy. The twins lived two days. The attending physician was Doc King. A daughter, Carol Ann Polm Smith, of Broken Arrow; a son, Charlie Allen Polm, of Hallett; a daughter, the late Diana Lynn Polm, and a daughter, Chris Elaine Polm Perryman and her husband, Mark, of Jennings, completed the family. Coleen was a stay-at-home mother, a caring listener and encourager with a vibrant sense of humor. She was like a second mother to her younger siblings after their parents were gone. Throughout her life, Coleen never lost her young-at-heart attitude. On her 90th birthday, Jan. 13, 2018, she said, “I may be 90, but I don’t feel old.” All 11 children of Pearl and Gordon had fun far beyond what others could understand. Coleen and her sisters, Mamie, Susie and Katie, called themselves Pearl’s Girls. One of their most satisfying endeavors was to tease their brothers. The second greatest life choice Coleen made was when she bowed at the altar of a little church in Jennings and gave her heart to Jesus. Surviving are grandchildren: James Allen Polm, Charla Fay Polm Clark, Randee Lynn Polm Jones, Mindi Dawn Polm, Charley Allen Polm, Jr., Steven Edward Clark and Dennis Allen Clark. A sister Catherine “Katie” Doris Ables, of Mountain View, Arkansas, remains as well as two first cousins Alta Laverta Henderson Morton and Wanda Omega Henderson McDaniel, of Bristow. Rufus preceded Coleen in death Dec. 22, 1992, at Gypsy. Also preceding her are nine siblings: Willard “Bud” Thomas Henderson, Hubert James Henderson, Alan James Henderson, Jimmie Neal Henderson, Zelma Gertrude Henderson Mooney, Flossie Marie Henderson Williams, Alpha Rita Henderson Hogan, Mamie Lee Henderson Hasty, and Sharron Sue “Susie” Henderson Boyer. Memorial services are Friday, March 2 at Hutchins Maples Matherly Funeral Home.
