Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

This is the time of the year when the thought of giving to others is foremost in our minds. Perhaps you have done all you can, or maybe you would like just one more thing to contribute to. Well, let me suggest that you consider donating to Harry’s Blessings in a Backpack.

Many yeas ago, Harry McMillan presented his Sunday school class with the idea of packing food for school children who needed food for the weekends. They could eat free while they were still in school, but they were a little hungry over the weekends when parents were short of money. So a few ladies at the Presbyterian Church got together and started “packing”. A list of the students who needed this service was furnished by the schools, and bags were filled and delivered on Fridays.

Fast forward to today and you will find about 12 ladies and one gentleman who are still “packing”. This group is made up of people from several different churches in Bristow and Tulsa. We meet every Thursday morning at the Presbyterian Church at 9:30 a.m., pack the bags and deliver them to Edison and Collins Schools to be passed out. We are currently filling 145 bags and the food in these filled bags cost between $5.00 and $6.00 each.

The greatest thing that has happened is that the Bristow community has stepped forward and donated funds so that we can continue to supply this food to hungry children. I can’t begin to tell you how much the children who receive the bags, and all of us who pack them appreciate your continued support. So, if your heart nudges you to contribute to this worthy cause, you can mail a check to Bristow Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 805, Bristow, Oklahoma with the notation “Backpack”. Every penny given is a blessing to a child.

Thank you and God bless you.
Myra Fadely
