Sparks’ story

As a junior at Milfay High School, Carl Ray Sparks decided to serve his country by enlisting in the National Guard.

He was only 16 years old when he was invited by classmate Glenn Long to attend a National Guard drill in Bristow on April 1, 1948. On that day, Sparks enlisted as a private with Company G, 279th Infantry, 45th Division. Little did he know at the time, this would lead to a 32-year career with the Army and National Guard.
