Honoring our Veterans

By Shirley Todd

When I think of Veterans Day, I try to take time to be thankful for the men and women who have served, so I can be free.

I think of my niece who is currently serving in the US Air Force and on tour in Kuwait, hopefully she will be home soon. I have this picture of her when she served in Afghanistan a few years ago, all dressed in her fatigues and holding her gun. It was strange to see this sweet little girl who was my shadow, all grown up and holding this large weapon ready to defend herself and her fellow soldiers at any cost.

I am so proud of her. She joined the Air Force right after graduating high school in 2003. After basics she has been stationed at different bases across the world. From Colorado to South Korea, now her home base is at Tinker and we like her close to home. While serving, she has graduated from college and has matured into this incredible young woman. The military has helped her become a strong and independent woman.
