On May 29, 2026 Governor Stitt signed the “Rocket's Red Glare Act”, legalizing bottle rockets that have been missing from Oklahoma's night sky since 1981, over 45 years. The bottle rocket, or stick rocket as some call it, was banned due to so many roof fires caused from the rockets landing on roof tops. Many Oklahoman’s remember setting off bottle rockets when they were a kid and a lot have memories of someone loosing fingernails or receiving severe burns to the hands and face from bottle rockets. Many people in the past drove across state lines to get bottle rockets for their 4th of July celebration. Senate Bill 1948 also allows fireworks to now be sold yearround. Fireworks stands and warehouses are now prepping for the loud comeback of bottle rockets. Some owners are wondering if selling fireworks year round will have an increase of revenue impact on them, asking will the demand be there?
A few rules to follow for private property owners
• You can shoot fireworks year-round on private property as long as there is no county burn ban in effect.
• You must give prior notice to your local firefighting agency before setting off fireworks even on private property.
Some restrictions will apply:
• Fireworks are strictly prohibited in areas with an active county burn ban.
• Discharging fireworks is banned when winds are over 20 mph.
• Fireworks cannot be ignited within 150 feet of any building or vehicle, or within 500 feet of churches, hospitals, or schools.
• Municipalities are still permitted to enforce specific city ordinances, such as banning them during late-night or early-morning hours, or obtaining a permit to shoot fireworks inside the city limits.
• Fireworks may not be ignited or discharged from a motor vehicle.
• No person may throw or place ignited fireworks into or at a motor vehicle.
• No person may throw or discharge fireworks at or near groups of people.
• Bottom line, firework enthusiasts living inside the city limits must follow their local city ordinance pertaining to the discharging of fireworks inside the city limits.
