City council approves use of armory for Day Camp

The Bristow City Council made several decisions on agenda items in Monday's meeting. One major decision was allowing Bristow Day Camp to continue to use the armory building for Day Camp. The city is concerned as to what the liability is for the city allowing the children to gather at the building. Vicki Groom, Day Camp leader, presented to the council all the reasons that they should be allowed to continue the usage of the armory. Groom stated that they have used the armory for approximately 44 years and have never had a problem with a safety issue. Over 300 participants are in Day Camp and not one time had there been a problem. Groom said if they were not allowed to use the armory, there would be no Day Camp and that was not fair to all the children who attend each year. No other city has a Day Camp like this and it is good for the community. It is only 12 days and a couple hours a day. Councilman Johns made the motion to approve the agenda item and it was seconded by Councilman Roberts. So, the kids will have Day Camp as they always do.

Another item discussed was adopting an ordinance that no signs may be put on city property, including the right-of-way and public utility easements. Johns made the statement that why adopt an ordinance if there is no fine imposed. This agenda item was tabled in order to get more clarification before adopting such an ordinance.

The council approved closing Main Street from 8th to 10th Streets from 4;30 pm to 9:30 pm for the lighting of the Chrysler Tower. They also approved declaring on Glock 34 pistol and one badge as surplus and allowing ex-chief of police Kendra Raney to have both items.

The council went into executive session to discuss the employment of Brian Vanzant to the Bristow Fire Department. After executive session the council approved the employment of Vanzant, pending his physical and with a probabtion period of one year.
