Summer is filled with all kinds of activities and camps for children, but I recently stumbled upon a type of camp that I never knew existed. The best part? The camp is located in Creek County—about 15 minutes outside of Bristow.
For the past 3 years, High on a Hill Goats, LLC, just outside of Kellyville has hosted goat yoga—a fan favorite. With their goat yoga being such a hit and visiting families being enamored by the animals on their farm, sisters Leah and Olivia Chatron, began planning something they had seen done in other states but not in Oklahoma: offering a farm camp for Oklahoma children.
Leah, a former Tulsa and Union Public Schools elementary teacher, and her sister, Olivia, who has experience teaching horseback riding lessons, decided to create their own farm camp on their 25acre farm. Together, the sisters plan to offer campers the ability to interact with Miniature Highland cattle, chickens, goats, horses, and pigs while experiencing farm life.
The sisters’ stated purpose for the camp includes exposing and teaching kids about farming and raising animals, from where their food comes, and aspects of what it takes to grow food. Campers will be able to bottle feed the Mini Highlands, tend the piglets, ride the horses, and bathe and groom the animals. Leah noted that younger kids typically most enjoy interacting with the smaller animals while the older adolescents enjoy bottle feeding the cows. Campers will also learn how to milk a Mini Highland dairy cow. Additional activities may include scavenger hunts, using an incubator and hatching chicks, fishing, arts and crafts, and other outdoor activities catered to campers by age group.
The three camps will be held in July over 3 weeks from Monday through Thursday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 12:30 p.m. daily. Each camp will last one week with attendance determined by age. The youngest campers, ages 4 to 6, will attend the first camp from July 8 through July 11. The second camp, held from July 15 through July 18, will be for campers aged 7 to 11 years. Finally, the last camp will be held for campers aged 12 to 16 years from July 22 through July 25. Most of all, the Chatron sisters hope campers will learn and have a lot of fun through their camp.
