Bristow Social Services, BSS, recently received a special donation from Miranda Groom’s Family and Consumer Science class, FCS, and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America, FCCLA, student members at Bristow Public Schools.
Last week, Director Toni Godwin and Katie Anderson of Bristow Social Services delightfully received 54 unique, handmade “ugly dolls” from Groom’s students. Groom noted the ugly doll project allowed students to complete their sewing lessons and allowed for fun and community service as well. For the project, students created unique hand drawings of their dolls before cutting and hand-stitching them. Finally, students named and wrote stories for their dolls, which will accompany them to their forever homes with the community children receiving them.
Groom explained that her students range in age from 14 to 18 years. She said that for their final sewing project, “We needed to incorporate one last project which involved working on our sewing skills, impacting our community and giving back, doing something in the classroom that the students not only enjoy but can find meaning in. This project was perfect and checked every box! We are also committed to keeping our dolls healthy for their young owners, offering free sewing surgery if their dolls ever need to be stitched up. Kinda like a real-life Doc McStuffins.”

As for their thoughts on the project, two students shared: “The importance of the project is to bring joy into a younger person life to give back to everybody no matter their age or circumstance. Being committed to this makes us take responsibility in a since to make something to put a smile on someone’s face. I am very proud of the end result seeing how many were made and how creative they all turned out. It is always difficult to learn something new but at the end it was very fun and well worth the positive impact on someone else.” Ryian Sisco, FCCLA president.
“I really enjoyed making the ugly dolls in our FACS class because I could be very creative with it and it was all for a good cause. I think it is important to give back to the community and dedicate a portion of time towards giving back and this project did just that. I loved looking at all of the dolls and knowing that all of my classmates did this project for these kids.” Hailey Richardson, FCCLA vice president.
